Methyl tert-Butyl Ether, Reagent, also known as MTBE, is an organic compound that is a flammable, volatile, colorless liquid that is has a slight minty odor and is sparingly soluble in water. It is used in gasoline as an additive to raise the octane number by oxygenating the gasoline to reduce engine knocking. MTBE is also used as a solvent and has a distinct advantage over most other ether solvents as it reduces the tendency of forming explosive organic peroxides. Its reagent grade means this is the highest quality commercially available for this chemical and that the American Chemical Society has not officially set any specifications for this material.
